CHICAGO - A top FBI official said Monday that a body found in an SUV is believed to be that of Jennifer Hudson's missing 7-year-old nephew, the focus of a desperate search since the Oscar winner's mother and brother were found shot to death in their home three days earlier.
While the body has not been positively identified, FBI Deputy Director John Pistole said authorities believe it to be that of Julian King, who also lived in the home.
Chicago police said the body of a black male child was found shortly after 7 a.m. in the rear seat of an SUV. An autopsy was planned for Tuesday.
The SUV was found parked on the street in a neighborhood of brownstone homes and apartment buildings, and matched the one sought in an Amber Alert issued after Hudson's mother and brother were found slain Friday, police Cmdr. Wayne Gulliford said.
In Washington, Pistole said at a news conference on child exploitation that authorities found a body "who we believe to be the missing victim in Chicago, the nephew of Jennifer Hudson. We are working with Chicago police to get a positive identification of the victim."
Hudson had offered $100,000 Sunday for information leading to Julian's safe return. He is the son of Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia Hudson. Telephone and e-mail messages left Monday for Hudson's publicist, who had been releasing statements on behalf of the family, were not answered.
'Domestic' violence suspected
Chicago police have characterized the killings as "domestic related" and have been questioning William Balfour, who is the estranged husband of Julia Hudson and is being held in state custody on a parole violation. Balfour is not the boy's father and has not been charged in the slayings.
Balfour, 27, was taken into custody Friday by Chicago police for questioning in the killings. On Sunday, he was transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections "based on his active parole violation unrelated to this investigation."
Records from the Corrections Department show Balfour is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle.
Balfour's mother, Michele Balfour, has said Hudson's mother kicked Balfour out of the family home last winter. She denied her son had anything to do with the killings.
Corrections spokeswoman Januari Smith said Balfour would probably remain in state custody until the Illinois Prisoner Review Board looked at his case. She would not say where Balfour was being held, and it was unclear whether Balfour had an attorney.
Bodies ID'd by Hudson
Hudson, who won an Academy Award in 2007 for her role in "Dreamgirls," was in Chicago during the weekend. The medical examiner's office confirmed Hudson, 27, identified the bodies of her mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson. The deaths were ruled homicides.
Neighbors and well-wishers brought stuffed animals and other items to a makeshift memorial outside Donerson's two-story white clapboard home as news of Monday's discovery spread.
"Everybody knows Jennifer Hudson, but I would be here even if it was little Suzy on the corner," said Tacara Juarez, 26, who doesn't know the family but lives in the neighborhood.
On Sunday, Hudson appealed to the public for help, offering the reward and asking any information be given to Chicago police.
"Jennifer and her family appreciate the enormous amount of love, support and prayers they have received while she and her family try to cope with this tragedy and continue the search for Julian," said a statement from her publicist.

Hi, yes, very sad.
Brian
From Gail’s notes (Eisenhower, cero street (maybe Cicero) and a bunch of west streets) to where found, not far at all from where she said. However, it is a little further from the house where he was taken (7019 S. Yale), 26 miles but maybe it is the 50-20 streets she was referring too.

Yes, they think it is him, I was just saying, in A. is where Gale said he would be, B. is where he was found and C. is where he was taken from. I think it is very close. I could tell last night he was no longer with us. It is so sad.

Without a doubt, this is the man Gale saw during the radio show.
(CNN) -- The estranged brother-in-law of singer and actress Jennifer Hudson was charged Tuesday with three counts of first-degree murder stemming from the fatal shootings of Hudson's mother, brother and nephew, police said.

William Balfour, here in an undated photo, is the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia.
William Balfour, 27, was also charged with one count of home invasion, authorities said at a news conference.
Balfour is the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia Hudson, and the stepfather of one of the victims, 7-year-old Julian King.
The motive for the shootings was "domestic-related, between him and his former wife, and that's about as far as we can go," said Deputy Police Superintendent Steve Peterson.
Balfour was first detained for questioning on October 24, the day Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson, were found shot to death in their home on Chicago's South Side. Authorities said at the time that they were holding Balfour for an unspecified parole violation.
The child's body was found three days later in an abandoned SUV on the city's West Side. Authorities later found a handgun near the vehicle. Peterson said Wednesday that gun was linked to the shootings, and police believe the boy was killed in the SUV.
Balfour "has made statements about the investigation," Peterson said. "However, at this time, we don't want to go into what was said."
Police Superintendent Jody Weis said Hudson's family was "a key partner in this investigation, cooperating with detectives every step of the way under very stressful and painful circumstances." Members of the community also assisted in various ways, he said.
The family is "relieved and happy that the Chicago Police Department was able to bring this case to a successful conclusion," Peterson said.
Hudson's publicist refused to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
Balfour was served with a warrant Monday afternoon at the Statesville, Illinois, prison where he was being held for violating his parole, Weis said. He was released from the prison into the custody of Chicago police, authorities said, and was being held in a district jail pending a hearing set for Wednesday.
Authorities said Tuesday that Balfour's girlfriend was cooperative in the investigation, but did not elaborate.
According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Balfour spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle. He was free on parole at the time of the shootings.
Hudson won a best supporting actress Oscar for her portrayal of Effie in the film version of the Broadway musical "Dreamgirls." She competed on the third season of the singing competition "American Idol" in 2004, becoming one of the top seven contestants before being eliminated from the contest.
Michele Davis-Balfour, Balfour's mother, passionately defended her son Monday to a gaggle of reporters. She said that at least one of the witnesses that police used to build a case against Balfour was lying.
"My son did not do this. I am sick of this. They need to focus on somebody else," Davis-Balfour said.
She said Balfour has an alibi -- he was with one of his three girlfriends the night of the slaying.
"He was with Diana that night and with Kate in the morning," she said.
Balfour's attorney, Josh Kutnick, also said Balfour has told him that he did not commit the crimes.
"He believes when the evidence comes out, he will be found not guilty," Kutnick said.
Balfour had a parole hearing scheduled for later this week, but Peterson said Wednesday that the approaching hearing did not influence the timing of the charges being filed.
Regarding the strength of the case against Balfour, Weis said, "You never know how a jury is going to decide cases ... but I am confident that the evidence that's been collected, the testimony that's been secured is strong, and I think we can make a very viable case in court."
