Falling roof nearly hits fire crews

FIREFIGHTERS narrowly escaped being crushed when the roof collapsed on a burning house in Melbourne today.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) said fire crews were called about 2am (AEDT) to the fire in a single-storey weatherboard house at Kensington, in the city's inner-west.
The three-bedroom house was well alight when they arrived.
A spokesman said crews had begun to tackle the fire from the inside of the house when the roof collapsed, narrowly missing firefighters.
"Within minutes the corrugated iron clad roof began to collapse and forced all firefighting activities to be done externally," he said. "The fire was eventually brought under control in just over half an hour, but little could be done to save the dwelling."
The blaze was being treated as suspicious and damage has been estimated at $350,000.
