RANGER, N.C. -- The composite sketch of a suspect gave the GBI just what it needed -- new leads in the disappearance of Kristi Cornwell.

Cornwell's image has been seen all over Ranger, N.C. for several months. Ranger is about 25 miles from the spot where she was last seen in August.

A sketch of a man who is suspected in an attempted abduction in Ranger just days before Cornwell disappeared is the best lead investigators have so far in the Cornwell case. As a result of the sketch, GBI investigators said they've had more than two dozen new leads.

For months, a picture of Cornwell has been on the front door of Peddler's Country Market in Ranger. Now there's something new - a sketch of a man and a car. It's evidence of an attempted abduction just days before Cornwell disappeared - with multiple similarities to the disappearance of Cornwell.

"It's pretty scary, because we've got children in the area," said store clerk Bonnie Turner. "And women that walk around, and also driving at night."

A woman walking along a road at 9:00 at night, became the victim of what appears to be an attempted abduction. Investigators have released a sketch of a man who they said was driving a silver Nissan XTerra. It happened just 25 miles from where Kristi Cornwell was last seen, walking at 9:00 at night.

Authorities said they are not sure if the two cases are connected. Still, Christi's brother Richard, and other family members have been keeping an eye out for anyone who resembles the sketch. They've also been watching for the vehicle shown in the GBI sketch.

"It's been a full time job," said Richard Cornwell. "Don't know for sure the number of hours, but it's more than a full time job."

Richard has taken time off from his job to devote himself to trying to find his sister.

"With the detailed composite, and the photo of this vehicle, I think they're gonna get good information on the Ranger case," Richard said. "And there may be some connection that may help us find Christi alive."

GBI agents said they are now following about two dozen new leads on top of the more than 1,600 leads that they've been following in the case.
