here are a few snippets of info in todays papers..earlier on tv there was an interview about the 1st anniversary coming up, next week,and there was an interview with an American man and his daughter, (i can't remember the name now) but he got her back by dogged determination, and never giving up.He said that he had talked with the Mccanns when they were in the States recently, and Kate had told him that "She had been having lots of dreams about Madeline lately, and she "felt"" that Madeleine was still alive and would be returned"......it brought to mind you saying a while back that Kate was having dreams, and she was to "follow her heart or instincts"and she woud find her! Iam off to find some more (if i can).....bye for now

Hi again, was told about the abduction attempt...I hope they try and catch him, however I do not think it's related to this case.

You might be referring to the Smart case, I know allot about that one too.

One thing that I have learned is that you cannot make someone believe in something they do not want to.  I believe that Kate could find her daughter on her own...but talking and taking action are two different things.

I do not always believe in my dreams, as many are just thoughts of the day I did not manage to 'dump' before going to sleep...this is why I constantly try to improve my meditation skills.

I had another dream about Madeleine last night, this one says a reporter finds her during an anniversary event in PDL...I think...and I'm guessing this is to take place on Saturday.   Is this really going to happen, or is my mind just creating something I want to happen...right now, I do not know...but I do know is that she will never be found if no one is actually searching.

The McCann's should have a detailed map of PDL, above and below ground.  They should have all areas that were searched and by who checked off...the town is not that large...if any area has not been searched, I would want to know why.  Make the map the public...show the media area's that have been searched and area that still need attention...use the press to their advantage.  If an area is too dangerous to search, use a RC robot...or whatever it takes...just get it done.  I would love it if the book the McCann's are to write has a happy ending.

Shattered Kate McCann has admitted she sometimes feels like giving up the desperate search for her missing daughter Madeleine.

The heartbroken GP says the year-long hunt for the four-year-old has left her and husband Gerry on the brink of exhaustion.

Numerous "sightings" of the blonde toddler have turned out to be false alarms. The couple have also had to cope with being made arguidos - formal suspects in the case. They have even received death threats.

Publicly GP Kate and Gerry continue to insist Madeleine is still alive and will one day be returned to them. But privately they are racked by doubts. Kate, 40, said: "You have days when you're so down and desperate and tired, you think you've got to switch off.

"I think, okay, we've tried really hard and we've come up with nothing and now we need to make the best of what we've got.

"But we're never going to hit that day. It doesn't matter how small the possibility is of Madeleine being found alive, the possibility is still there."

She revealed their two younger children, three-year-old twins Sean and Amelie still miss their big sister.

They make pretend calls to her on a toy phone and search the house to see if they can find her.

Kate and Gerry believe it would not be right to hide the truth from them.

She said: "If they talk about her they will be told that Madeleine's not here and everyone's looking for her. It's not brushed under the carpet.

"Sometimes Sean and Amelie try to ring her on their toy phones, then go off to find her."

Members of the McCann family will return to Praia da Luz in Portugal later this week to mark Saturday's anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance.

Gerry's brother John, 48, his sister Patricia and her partner Sandy hope to give the search new impetus.

Kate and Gerry asked them to go on their behalf to join with Portuguese villagers for a special service.

Kate and Gerry will mark the occasion privately at their home in Rothley, Leics.

Madeleine's gran, Eileen McCann, said last night: "Kate is trying to keep life normal for the twins, but they are just not a family unit without Madeleine."

Meanwhile it emerged yesterday that the McCanns are to write a book about their ordeal - with all proceeds going to the Find Madeleine Fund.

THE DESCRIPTION of a man given to cops investigating the attempted abduction of a Dutch girl matches a suspect in the Madeleine McCann case.

Details of the latest incident, which involves a 15-year-old, have this week been passed to specialist officers in Portimao - the same Portuguese force investigating the disappearance of Maddie.

The teenager had been walking home from a supermarket in the tiny fishing village of Senhora da Rocha, which is just 30 miles away from Praia da Luz, the resort where four-year-old Maddie disappeared almost a year ago.

She was followed by a man in a black Jeep with tinted windows.

After a few minutes, he pulled up in front of her and opened the driver's door so her pathway was blocked.

He is then believed to have tried to entice her into the car and when she tried to escape, he grabbed her and tried to pull her in.

Luckily, the girl managed to fight him off, with the attacker driving off when a car approached from the opposite direction.

The teen said the man was about 40-years-old, with long hair in a pony tail and with gold rings on his fingers.

This description matches that of the man Maddie's parents Kate and Gerry McCann believe snatched their child.

According to witnesses he was between 35 and 40-years-old and had long, straggly hair.

The four-year-old disappeared from her parents' holiday apartment on May 3 and police were given a description of the man later that month.

An FBI-trained artist produced sketches using information from holidaymaker Gail Cooper, who was staying nearby.

The father of the Dutch girl - who does not want to be named - told Sky News Online: "I am lucky she is a strong girl and managed to break free and get away from the man.

"She was walking back from the supermarket as she does on an almost daily basis, at around 6pm, when it happened.

"The man in the black Jeep followed her and then stopped a few metres in front of her and tried to get her in the car.

"He had his trousers down, and was talking to her. He then grabbed her but my daughter fought him.

"Another car arrived and he drove off. I don't know what brand of Jeep he had but my daughter said it had a yellow foreign number plate.

"The police are investigating it, and have taken down all the details.

"I have heard there was a similar incident in the area, near a primary school."

The girl has given officers a detailed description of the attacker, which has been circulated to other forces in Portugal.

The incident on March 11 was being dealt with by the local Lagoa GNR police force but Maddie cops have now been passed the details.

Portuguese police refused to comment on the case when contacted by Sky News Online or whether they are linking it to Madeleine's disappearance.

Some villagers said there was a similar incident recently, involving a young girl on a bus home from school in nearby Armação de Pêra.

She told her mother a car pulled up alongside the bus near Alcantarilha and the driver had his trousers down and was exposing himself to her.

Thanks...wanted to point out something else...people greave in different ways...look at this case I worked on about a wife sent to prison for poisoning her husband...she was convicted of murder by the way she talked and acted after the death...people thought she looked and acted guilty...guess what?  They were wrong!

Kate McCann's mother says she feels she let Madeleine down and that the hunt to find her is her only comfort

Madeleine McCann's mother says she feels she let her daughter down by leaving her alone on the night she vanished.

Kate McCann, 40, is tortured by feelings of guilt that she left Madeleine and her two-year-old twins sleeping in the family's holiday apartment while she and husband Gerry went out for dinner with friends.

As Saturday's anniversary of the disappearance approaches, her mother Susan Healy said: "I know she feels she let Madeleine down. The only way she can cope is by trying 100 per cent to get Madeleine back. She can't possibly give up."

Mrs Healy, 62, spoke of the toll the last year has taken on her daughter, and said she could not stop imagining what might have happened to Madeleine.

"I think Kate feels she needs to know what's happened to Madeleine, because her imagination...'.

She added: "Kate said, 'If Madeleine is dead I need to know'.

"That goes for us as well."

Madeleine vanished from the apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3, a few days before her fourth birthday.

Her parents, both doctors from Rothley, Leicestershire, believe she was abducted but they remain official suspects in the Portuguese police investigation.

Mrs Healy, of Allerton, Liverpool, spoke of the strain that Madeleine's disappearance had placed on her daughter, a devout Roman Catholic.

Mrs McCann became worryingly thin and gaunt as she struggled to cope with the police investigation and her shock at being named as a suspect, or arguido.

Her mother told the Liverpool Daily Post: "I can't believe how strong Kate is. I just don't know where she gets the strength from. Prayer does give you strength."

Susan and Brian Healy are struggling to keep hopeful that their granddaughter could still be alive almost exactly a year after she disappeared during a holiday to Portugal

Mrs McCann faced criticism in some quarters over claims that she looked too calm in the days after Madeleine's disappearance.

There were even allegations that Portuguese police first suspected she could have been involved after officers' wives commented that she looked 'too attractive' to be a grieving mother.

And yesterday it was revealed that the disgraced former head of the investigation described her as a "cold actress".

Goncalo Amaral told a journalist from the Spanish newspaper El Mundo: "You didn't see the mother. You don't know the mother. She is cold. She is astute. She is an actress."

Amaral, 48, was sacked from the Madeleine investigation after he launched an astonishing attack against British police, accusing them of investigating only leads which helped the McCanns.

He is facing trial over claims that he covered up the alleged torture of a mother of another missing girl, who vanished in 2004.

Mrs Healy defended her daughter against the criticism, saying: "She comes across in pictures quite well. She looks very attractive, though she wouldn't think that."

But she added: "No one takes less time on themselves than Kate. She's not into make-up. I've looked at pictures in the early days when people said how cool she looks and, to me, she looks in anguish.

"I think if people can't see the anguish in her face they are blind, they really are."

Mrs Healy and her husband Brian, 68, will mark the anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance at a special Mass in Liverpool, at the parish church where their daughter was married.

But the McCanns themselves are expected to observe the milestone in private.

Mrs Healy said her daughter wanted to keep the day "low key" but said she supported a plan to light candles, lamps and lanterns for Madeleine at 9.15pm, the time her parents believe she was taken.

Back in Praia da Luz, plans for a police reconstruction of the night of May 3 have been plunged into chaos.

Mr and Mrs McCann have said they will not return to Portugal unless police lift their arguido status, and their friends, the so-called Tapas Seven, have questioned the value of a reconstruction so long after the event.

Portuguese police use reconstructions to test the accounts of those involved and there has been speculation that police hope to prove there are contradictions in the statements of the group.

The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the couple and their friends had not ruled out the possibility of cooperating with a reconstruction, if they felt it was being done to try to find Madeleine.

But he added: "Until they get satisfactory answers, they will not go. The lawyers are not saying it is a trap but they are asking what the motivation is behind it." Police are investigating the attempted abduction of a girl only a few miles from Praia da Luz.

The 15-year-old was walking home from a supermarket in the Algarve town of Senhora da Rocha when she was followed by a man in a black Jeep who tried to bundle her inside.

She fought back furiously and he drove off when another car approached.

The girl, whose Dutch expatriate family have asked for her not to be identified, described her attacker as about 40 and said he had long hair in a pony tail and wore several gold rings.

Her description is similar to that of a man spotted hanging around in Praia da Luz in the weeks before Madeleine's disappearance.

The disgraced head of the Madeleine McCann investigation called distraught mother Kate McCann a 'cold actress', it has been claimed.

Goncalo Amaral accused Mrs McCann, 40, of controlling her emotions, the Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported.

He told a journalist: 'You didn't see the mother, you don't know the mother, she is cold, she is astute, she is an actress.'

Mrs McCann, a GP, faced widespread criticism over claims she did not weep for her missing daughter Madeleine.

It later emerged she was advised by British police not to display emotion as an abductor could derive some sick pleasure from watching her suffer.

Amaral, 48, was sacked from the Madeleine investigation after he launched an astonishing attack against British police, accusing them of only investigating leads which helped the McCanns.

He is facing trial over claims he covered up the alleged torture of a mother of another missing girl, who vanished from the village of Figueira, some 30 miles from Praia da Luz.

It also emerged today that police are investigating a death threat made against Mr and Mrs McCann.

They have passed on details of hate mail - including the threat - to detectives after it was delivered to their home in Rothley, Leicestershire.

He said one, however, was a threat against their lives.

Kate and Gerry are preparing to be thrust back under the spotlight, with next weekend marking a full year since Madeleine's disappearance.

Mr Mitchell said: "They recognise it is an opportunity to re-energise the search for Madeleine."

Some members of the missing four-year-old's family are set to fly to the coastal resort to mark the anniversary in Saturday but Mr and Mrs McCann will remain at their home.

Her uncle and aunt John McCann and Trisha Cameron are expected at a special church service in Praia da Luz.

But the Anglican chaplain Father Haynes Hubbard, who will conduct prayers, confirmed her parents had decided against attending on Saturday.

Father Hubbard said: "This was an act of violence and an act of evil but we will continue praying for her."

The missing child's parents,who have participated in an ITV documentary to be broadcast on Wednesday, are officially suspects in the Portuguese investigation but deny any wrongdoing. Mr Mitchell said the couple may write a book about their daughter and their year.

He said: "The idea of writing an official book at some point is appealing. It's a legitimate way of raising money for the fund but would also give them a chance to put across their side of the story, and to talk about some of the wider issues."

Scott Pack, a former head of buying for Waterstone's, said the McCanns' book would fall into the category of "misery memoir".

He said: "It's bound to go for a decent amount and I think you're talking of at least £500,000. It could go for a million.

"It has the potential to be of enormous interest with buyers across the market - from the little middle-class audience who think, 'This could have been us' to the mass market who buy books in supermarkets and have been devouring this story for a year

SUGGESTION:  I realize that the McCann's spokesman has stated several times that Kate and Gerry have been 100% truthful and honest with all testimony given to the PJ...and so have their friends.  So that said, I do not need to reiterate what could happen if the PJ were able to prove certain sworn statements about timelines and connections to other suspects were found to be incorrect.  I just wanted to put this out there just in case someone forgot the shoe fit...anyway, I'll never bring it up again.

I know that you have stated under the Madeleine Mccann case that you are hoping not to have the need to use the next pages (29 & 30), I am writing this letter to you and hoping not only that you will post it, but that it will fit on page 28 . I have been having some very strong feelings lately, and the observations I have made regarding the current state of the case on Madeleine I feel is very important and I wish to share these thoughts with both you and your readers as well. I would like to gauge any ones thoughts on this as well as hear feedback.

I know that there has been other readers who have expressed thoughts that Madeleine may have been found, or at the very least that it is known where she is currently. Keeping an open mind to this, I have been keeping track of what I feel have been many peculiarities lately within this case as of late. Just to read one on its own does not add up to any suspicion but to list all of them out makes one think about just what is going on behind the scenes.

1) First thing I found extremely peculiar was the fact that after the last sighting in the South of France was the fact that unlike other sightings beforehand, no one ever got back to the media with information on who the child was or the adult with her. The authorities just blankly stated “we ruled it out”. Extremely strange to me.

2) Immediately after this at least on the internet there seemed to be a media blackout for many days right after this sighting and the media blitz it caused. Still no one ever came forward with the name of the child or the adult with her….which I felt for certain would come in the near future as it had with other sightings.

3) Shortly after this the media makes a formal announcement that the Mccanns will keep on Metodo 3, but only on a month to month contigent basis. No firm long term contract here. Hmmmmmm……..

4) Although this may seem irrelevant it was just another pebble added to pile of peculiarity….The media makes another formal announcement that Ben Affleck who held off on releasing his movie “Gone baby Gone” due to the sensitivity to the Mccann case will now be releasing his film by the end of June in the UK.

5) More quiet on the western front…another internet media blackout for over a week.

6) Then came probably what I felt was the most significant of all…The Mccann’s won the liebl suit against the media and the statement made from the newspapers wasn’t just Sorry, we did wrong, or sorry we overstepped our bounds we had no right to accuse anyone. Instead they state “We now know they (the Mccann’s) had nothing to do with the disappearance of their daughter.” I found this statement very intriguing and it only enhanced suspicions I have been having before this from the sighting in France on. (I myself personally don’t believe they had anything to do with their daughters disappearance) however for the newspaper to make such a bold correction in a the field of journalism knowing the importance of words on paper it just made alarms go off for me. How can they say this unless information is out there which can truly prove that Madeleine is in fact alive? Or even if a select few are privy to this info but possibly under a gag order through the government? To me it was a very bold statement for a media outlet to say after literally months of unjustly attacking this family…then to do a complete 360 like that? Unless that CCTV footage from France actually could show a living breathing Maddie, how can they unequivocally state knowing who had what to do with it. Truly it makes one think on it long and hard. Could Maddie at least have been proven to be alive at this point in time for this to happen? I think it is an extremely good possibility with only certain people being allowed this knowledge. This would also explain why the liebl bug has spread to the other “arguidos” Murat and Malinka.

7) Now just assuming for instance that Madeleine is in fact proven alive, better yet has been found and they are trying to piece together info as to what occurred that evening or a cover up being put into place before any return. Could this explain any possibility of the news report of Malinkas car being burned, or the liebl suits that have been reported to have been filed by them to the media?

I just feel like all these things are like a prelude or preparation to something and the feeling is getting stronger each day. Like the planets are aligning themselves. Many I’s being dotted and T’s crossed here. And lets not forget the coincidence of Murat just happening to be near the UK when authorities were to arrive there for the big interviews so publicized within the media…..Coinsidence or more than that?…. I feel very strongly that something big is going on behind the scenes and I just wished to share these thoughts and gauge what other people think about these points on paper.

I know how you feel...for example I've been waiting for over a week now for a very simple answer...is this Sofia Oliveira or not...and Sofia is just as import as Madeleine.  I would think it would just take a few hours for a response back for such a simple question...yet still nothing.   You also have some very good points and will share them.

Brian - yes - that was posted, about the crypt and depositing blessed sacrifices, et al - not so long ago - maybe page 25 / 26 / 27 ???.

Also I sent you that bit on how it is connected by a vertical passage from the beach below - only accessible at low tide / or by boat / or something of that sort....I'll go through my 'madeleine' file in OUTLOOK, and see if its there - got to wait til the kids go to bed :) so that I can get some time on my 'puter.

Thank you, and this is the same church that the PJ were digging at correct?   So they dug, knowing very well that tunnels were right beneath where they were digging.  Why not check the tunnels first?  Is it because they knew she was alive, the the digging was just for show? 

I think the best person to ask about these tunnels is real estate agent Robert Murat, I'm sure he knows exactly were every one is.

KATE and Gerry McCann have revealed the extent of hate mail they have received following their daughter Madeleine's disappearance.

In the documentary Madeleine, One Year On: Campaign For Change, to be broadcast on ITV1 at 8pm tonight, Mr McCann is seen reading out a vitriolic message, contained in a Christmas card, branding him and his wife "scum".

In a segment filmed in the family home in Rothley, Leicestershire, he drops the card inside a box marked "nasty".

Other boxes are marked "wellwishers", "psychics, visions and dreams" and even "nutty".

The writer of the card calls them "thieving b******s" for using money from the Find Madeleine Fund to make two payments on their mortgage.

"Gerry and Kate, how can you use money given by poor people in good faith to pay your mortgage on your mansion?" the message reads.

"You f****** thieving b******s.

It carries on: "Your brat is dead because of your drunken arrogance. Shame on you. I curse you and your family to suffer forever. Cursed Christmas. If you had any shame you would accept full responsibility for your daughter's disappearance and give all the money back. You are scum."

Mr McCann calmly comments: "That's quite nice. Very charming."

He reveals how one regular correspondent, who claims to be a barrister and former intelligence-services agent, has outlined a "huge conspiracy theory" about Madeleine passing through Belgium and Germany with the knowledge of the British government.

The couple speak about how they kept vigil all night on 3 May, 2007, the night their daughter disappeared from a Portuguese holiday apartment, before embarking on a desperate dawn search through the deserted resort of Praia da Luz.

Describing the moment she realised Madeleine was not in her bed, Mrs McCann says: "I rushed round the apartment, really quickly, just opened up cupboards and things, and then just went flying out down to the tapas restaurant, shouting, 'Someone's taken Madeleine'.

"And that's when the nightmare started."

She went on: "I just remember saying, 'Not Madeleine, not Madeleine, not Madeleine' and I can just remember saying that over and over and over again.

"Gerry was the same … I'm not used to seeing Gerry obviously that upset."

Mr McCann interjects: "I think fear is probably the right word, fear for your daughter, fear for yourself, fear for your family, fear for everything and that horrible kind of adrenalin – fight, flight."

On the reaction of their doctor friends, he says: "Some things kicked in and there was a lot of activity within the group quickly … I don't know if it's (being] used to dealing with very stressful situations at work or otherwise."

Mrs McCann explains: "I can remember our friends shouting, 'We need to close the borders' and they were shouting, 'Morocco, Algiers'.

"I can remember all this going on – and roadblocks, 'We need roadblocks'.

Mr McCann says he insisted his wife stay at the apartment in the hope that Madeleine would be found.

"I was mainly in the bedroom and I was just praying, actually," she recalls. "I was just ringing people and getting everyone to pray, and just felt so helpless."

But as the night wore on, there was a dawning realisation that their daughter was gone.

MADELEINE'S GRAN TELLS OF NIGHT OF ANGUISH

MADELEINE McCann's grandmother has recalled the moment she was told the youngster had gone missing.

Susan Healy, mother of Kate McCann, said one of the first things she said to Gerry was "where were you?" when Madeleine, three, vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

Mrs Healy, 62, also says of the so-called Tapas Nine: "I could shake all of them, every single one of them."

The gran, from Mossley Hill, Liverpool, said: "Why did they think – all of them – it was OK to do this? I think they were misled into thinking it was OK, but there was no CCTV, no security.

"There is an acceptance among couples with young children, like Kate and Gerry and their friends, that these are good resorts and safe environments."

Mrs Healy was speaking in the run-up to Saturday's 12-month anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance.

She recalled the phone call on the night of 3 May last year which alerted her to the news that her eldest grandchild was missing.

"A friend had just left and he was the last person I expected to ring.

"He said something like 'It's a disaster'. I was grappling to understand 'disaster'."

Mrs Healy and her husband Brian, 68, said they will attend a special mass at their local church on Saturday.

the opening frame you can see a round drain hole
covering in the middle of the street. as
villages/towns/cities are built up over time, we know
that they tend to lay a foundation over the top,
thereby leaving spaces underneath...not just for
drainage purposes. the drain in the picture looks like
it could be the main drain leading to/from the
beach...

I think when we find out the names of the children that have not been reported missing, and why this is...I think many of these cases will be solved.

Brian - How possible is it to get a complete list of the missing children in Portugal - there has to be a pattern to it - I have no doubt of this. There seem to be a lot missing from the islands (Câmara de Lobos – Madeira, especially) and the coastal region.

Este nao foi o unico desaparecimento em 1998.

Missing Children 2007

This following post is about all the children that have disappeared from my country in the last 17 years.

They too deserve to be reminded and their stories need to be retold. These children, many of them now adults, if still alive, were never seen again by their loved ones. And they need closure. They deserve to know what happened to their sons and daughters, who were snatched from their simple and normal lives.

Rachel Charles

It was the first case of kidnapping with a ransom request registered in the Algarve. In November of 1990 the Country woke up shocked with the news that Rachel Charles, a ten-year-old English girl who lived in Albufeira with her mother and her stepfather, had been abducted. Two days after having disappeared, Carol Charles, mother of the child, received a phone call of a man who was speaking English and who was demanding 51 million escudos (254.386 Euros) for Rachel's devolution. The girl was found dead days later. She had been strangled and abandoned in a pine tree plantation.

The Judicial Police investigated the case during several weeks and announced the detention of Michael Cook in the beginning of January. It was a friend of the family, who used the fact that the young girl to allure her into his car. The car was seen by the gardener of the family and his testimony was essential for the discovery of the murder and sentence.

Michael Cook, who had participated in the searches of the child, was condemned to 19 years of prison by qualified murder in January of 1992, sentence confirmed later by a second court after an appeal to justice.

Robert Spink, deputy of the Chamber of the Commons of the British Parliament, came out defending Cook, stating that the acting of the Portuguese authorities in this case had been very careless - pointed to several faults in the process, questioning the validity of the proofs used against Michael Cook. Robert Spink remembers a case that left him “very uncomfortable ": recalling the incident, "I was convinced that he was guilty, but I had an obligation to ensure that Michael Cook would have a fair trial", said Robert Spink.

When he was freed, Robert Spink wrote a letter to the British authorities to give account of this event and the return of Michael to the United Kingdom. After this letter, Michael Cook was placed in a list of sexual aggressors of children and he was since then under monitoring of the English policy.

Joana Cipriano

The case of Joana Cipriano highlights serious omissions on the part of authorities who failed to spot that the little girl was being exploited and neglected. According to a neighbour of the girl, Joana seemed unnaturally mature for her age. “She has a bearing and an attitude greatly beyond her years. Instead of playing with other children, she seems to spend her time taking care of her two little brothers.” Another neighbour described her as the “Cinderella” of the household, seen at all times of the day and night in the village, running errands for her family.

In September of 2004, Algarve knew another tragic history which evolved a child death. In the beginning, the mother, Leonor Cipriano started for presenting complaint in the GNR on the alleged disappearance of her daughter Joana of 8 years.
The PJ still investigated the presumption abduction, but this theory fast became false when the proper mother of the girl passed of complaining to suspicion.
After long inquiries, happened what was feared. João Cipriano, uncle of the girl and brother of Leonor, confessed to the PJ that he and his sister had spanked the girl until the death. Months later, added to his confession that had quartered the corpse. According to João, the body had been cut in three parts and kept in a refrigerating coffer, where the PJ found blood vestiges that corresponded to the girl. The brothers had gotten rid themselves of the body in the following days of the crime, but they didn’t say where they had hidden it.

Court hears Joana’s horror story

Onlookers in the public gallery screamed abuse at the mother and uncle of Joana Cipriano as they were ferried to and from court.

The case, which has shocked the nation with its account of incest, murder and desecration, took just three days to be tried. The Public Ministry has pressed for jail terms of 24 years for the defendants, who are charged with qualified murder, as well as desecrating and concealing a body.
Joana disappeared, presumed murdered, in the Algarve village of Figueira, near Portimão. She was last seen buying food from a nearby café on the evening of September 12 last year. Prosecutors charge that she came home to find her mother, 34-year-old Leonor Cipriano, and her uncle, 32-year-old João Cipriano, having sex. Fearful that Joana would relate the incident to her stepfather, they allege that the couple decided to kill her. The prosecution also said that the couple had repeatedly mistreated Joana, recounting that she was little more than a “servant” in her own household.

The court heard a catalogue of horrifying details, including an earlier video taped confession from Joana’s uncle in which he related the circumstances of his niece’s murder. This video testimony is now the subject of an appeal from the defence team who claim it should be excluded because the couple exercised their right to remain silent during the trial. In the taped confession, João Cipriano said he and his sister hit Joana who then banged her head against a wall before collapsing, unconscious, onto the floor. João Cipriano claimed that he had wanted to call an ambulance but that his sister prevented him, telling him instead to go to Joana’s stepfather and inform him that she had disappeared.

Mother had appealed for daughter’s return

Her mother made subsequent public appeals for her daughter’s safe return, claiming that she had been kidnapped. But authorities began to suspect the couple after villagers noted their allegedly offhand reaction to Joana’s disappearance. Local shopkeeper Nídia Rochato remembered that Leonor neither cried nor seemed unduly concerned. When she commented on this to her, Leonor reportedly replied that she believed that her daughter was still alive.

The absence of a corpse delayed the arraignment process but the Public Ministry were able to indict the couple following statements from neighbours. Investigators also gathered forensic evidence at the house where Joana lived with her mother, stepfather and two brothers.

A total of 45 witnesses, mostly relatives and villagers, testified in court between Wednesday and Friday of last week. Four jurors (one man and three women) and three judges will decide the verdict. The opinions of the jurors – a 20-year-old student, a physiotherapist, a library employee and a waitress – will carry the same weight as the judges.

Joana’s uncle had contempt for human life

Leonor and João Cipriano, who have been held on remand for over a year, stood silently and without emotion as they heard prosecutor José Pinheiro outline his case. He described João Cipriano as a man who “has contempt for human life, psychopathic tendencies and difficulty in controlling impulses”. Pinheiro also castigated Joana’s mother for her “emotional instability, insensitivity and disregard for other people’s needs”. Only when Pinheiro announced that he was pressing for a 24-year jail term for both defendants did Leonor show emotion, sobbing uncontrollably.

Pinheiro explained why his team was pressing for such a long sentence. “The defendants’ guilt is heightened by their cold and calculating behaviour after their child’s death, as well as the devious manoeuvres they adopted to conceal the crime,” he said.

The trial included key testimony from Joana’s stepfather, António Leandro, who related that Leonor had confided to him that she had had a sexual relationship with her brother. He also told the court that during this conversation, which took place a few days after Joana’s disappearance, at judicial police headquarters, Leonor had admitted that she and her brother had killed the little girl.

A key element of the prosecution’s case rests on the fact that the couple dismembered the girl’s corpse. António Leandro, confronted with photographs of tools allegedly used by the couple, said he recognised a saw he had kept at home. In the video taped confession, João Cipriano admitted that the body of the girl was dismembered and placed in a refrigerated trunk. A doctor involved in the case, Albino Santana dos Santos, conceded that body parts, matching the size of a girl of Joana’s height, could have been stuffed inside the trunk.

Defence team challenges evidence

Despite the evidence, João Grado, Leonor Cipriano’s lawyer, still pressed for her acquittal, describing the evidence as “miserable”. João Cipriano’s lawyer, Sara Rosado, reminded the court that Joana’s body had never been found and dismissed the prosecution’s version of events. “João Cipriano has an intelligence level considerably lower than the average. How is it possible that such a person could deceive everyone for so long?” she asked the court.

But prosecutors disagreed, describing the case as a “veritable horror story that proves that reality really does surpass fiction”. “Nobody can say that they wanted to kill her when they hit. But later when they persisted, they knew that she was going to die. Their guilt is absolute – the victim was a minor, the daughter and niece of the defendants,” they told the court.

The corpse of the girl never was found, but this fact didn’t hinder the PJ to continue with the inquiries, and in November of 2005 the court of Portimão condemned Leonor to twenty years and four months of arrest and João Cipriano to a penalty of nineteen years and two months.

Missing Children

The Judicial Police keeps open thirteen cases of missing children/teenagers.

The most known case is of Rui Pedro, disappeared in Lousada in 1998. The mother (Filomena) never stopped looking inside and out of the country.

Rui Pedro Mendonça: missing since 04/03/1998 - 11 years old in 1998; taken from his town of Lousada. It is now believed that this child was taken abroad and is in the in the hands of a pedophile network. For further information: www.ruipedro.net

In that afternoon of 4 of March of 1998, Rui Pedro disappeared. After the school, he went through the school of conduction of his grandfather, where his’ mother worked and asked her authorization to go out with a friend (Afonso Dinis) of 21 years. This friend was unemployed and he was a usual friend of the youngsters with half of his age. Filomena (the mother) didn’t authorise the son to go out with Afonso and told him to go and play with the bicycle in a strip of land behind of the conduction school and remembered him about his explanation class at 5 pm. In the afternoon, the parents were informed by the professor who told them that Rui hadn’t appeared. Filomena felt that something bad had happened.
In that same night, the people of Lousada with patrols of the GNR searched together all the spaces of the village, but nothing was found.

Days later, during the inquiries, a neighbour witnessed seeing Afonso (who has always denied that he had been with Rui,) speaking with Rui. During those same inquiries, Afonso said that if they wanted to find the youngster they had to close up the borders.
Nine years have passed waiting for Rui to come home.

Sofia Oliveira: missing since 22/02/2004 - 2 years old in 2004; kidnapped from her mother's home, in Câmara dos Lobos, Madeira. Her father, already convicted of her abduction, took her without her mother's knowledge and somehow the child got lost after that.

Cláudia Alexandra Silva e Sousa: missing since 13/05/1994 - 7 years old in 1994; disappeared from her hometown in Oleiros - Vila Verde. The child has a 10 cm scar in her right thigh, a scar in her lower lip and another in a finger. Believed to have been taken by two men and forced to get inside a car.

Rui Pereira: missing since 02/03/1999 - 13 years old in 1999; a boy from Vila Nova Famalicão. Rui has a small scar near his left eye, a scar between his upper lip and his right nostrel and a big birth mark on his back. Believed to be seen in Switzerland with 2 Italian men.\

João José Teles: missing since 06/10/1998 - 18 years old in 1998; disappeared from Câmara dos Lobos, Madeira. He studied in the Secondary school of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos.

Jorge Sepúlveda: missing since 15/08/1991 - 14 years old in 1991; disappeared from Massarelos, Porto. Jorge has a brown birth mark near his navel.

Ana Patricía Santos: missing since 15/06/2005 - 15 years old in 2005; last seen in Montijo, Setúbal. Gone from her Dad's house, there was an hypothesis that she runned away.

Tatiana Mendes or Odete Freman or Odete Frima: missing since May de 2005 - 7 years old in 2005; she was "adopted" by a couple with her mother's acceptance. She travelled to Portugal in May 2004, however a year later her adopting mother said that the young girl was given to another person and that, still in the year 2004, the girl had died in a traffic accident somewhere in the area of Badajoz/Espanha.

Rita Marques Cardoso Santos: missing since 01/08/2007 - 16 years old in 2007; She was last seen in the area of Chelas - Lisbon.

Jacira Rocha Gomes: missing since 23/11/2007 - 17 years old in 2007; the missing girl studies in the 8º grade of the secondary school D. Luísa de Gusmão, in the area of Penha de França, Lisbon. There were sightings in Moita, Vale de Amoreira e Cidade Sol, no Barreiro.

Sara Raquel Pinho Reis: missing since 23/02/2007 - 17 years old in 2007; disappeared from her hometown in Trofa - Porto.

Pamela Matias Santos: missing since 23/09/2007 - 17 years old in 2007; disappeared from Santarém.

Madeleine Beth Mccann: missing since 03/05/2007 - 4 years old in 2007; disappeared from the Ocean Club, Praia da Luz, Lagos, place where she was spending holidays with her parents. The disappearance occurred in a time when the child was left alone inside the apartment. Madeleine has a brown birth mark in the back of her left leg. Hello brian,

I hope that you and your family are doing fine. I haven't emailed you before, but i have been a regular reader of this site for months. However a recent email you received from...'K' as prompted me to email you.  To be honest this person echoed a lot of my thoughts . I feel the case as been turned upside down since this French sighting. Im not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing. Something tells me its neither,and instead its more of a sign that something is going on behind the scenes that the public is not to be made aware of.
'K' said that after this sighting in France their seemed to be a massive media blackout.....Well im not sure if 'k' knows ,but only a few days later it emerged that madeleine was suppose to have been seen in the British town of Dorset. And again another few days after that came out, it was announced that a Portuguese taxi driver claimed to have taken madeleine, kate and two men on a taxi journey to a waiting car some 1 hours drive away from luz the night she vanished.

The thing that struck me about all 3 of these sighting is that ... it was claimed that the people who saw madeleine actually saw her coloboma in her right eye!!!This is an extremely rare defect and for all three of these sightings to hold this credible piece of evidence ,i  have trouble believing  that the authorities have brushed them off with no more news about them.Unless of course they haven't been brushed off..but instead they are being kept secret??
Another thing that struck me as odd.....  as soon as this French sighting was made public...the other two sightings were ever so quickly,one after the other, reveled to the public. However these two sightings had already been reported previously to police!! Infact the taxi man reported his sighting the following day, after madeleine vanished. And the sighting in Dorset was also reported months Before. If these two later sightings were true why wouldn't they have released them to the public when ans as they happened?? They waited all that time to release such  vital information to the public???
Were these two sighting used as a decoy for the media???
What really happened in France??
Did that sighting hold the clue to the whereabouts of madeleine?
Why haven't we heared anymore about these sightings??

A thought i had on this once(just a thought),was that the French sighting had reveled some thing to police that they didn't want made public. Remember, the sighting was reported days before the media managed to get wind of it!!I think the police maybe wanted it kept under wraps, and when it was published in the papers the police had to deter attention away as to carry on with their enquirers privately.
Have they foiled the abductors of madeleine??
Are they trying to keep their investigation secret not to alert the abductors??

After reading your site recently i went into a link about the little girl Sophie Oliveira  who was abducted and has not been found since. Last night Faro police chief Guilhermino Encarnacao said: "We have evidence which indicates a kidnap."

He said they had a suspect and believed Maddie was alive and within three miles of the resort in Praia da Luz.
Encarnacao said police had "a profile" for a suspect but declined to give details "to safeguard the child's life".
He denied police had been slow to respond to the suspected abduction - getting to the scene within 10 minutes of the alarm being raised.
Around 150 agents are investigating in Portugal and they are in contact with British police, Europol and Interpol.

The headline says it all doesn't it?...And now all these months later after kate and gerry have campaigned for Madeleine's safe return, forcing the Portuguese police to face some very embarrassing mistakes made by their own incompetence, they have now decided there is no evidence(or atleast they say theres none) of a kidnap, and instead they want to try and charge KATE for negligence/child abandonment.
If thats their plan of attack, do they intend on charging the others that left their children alone? Or do they only plan to target kate alone??
The report above mentions how police have a profile of the type of person that they are looking for, but wont release it becasue they don't want to endanger Madeleine's life. They seemed so certain back then,i wonder what happened to make them change their minds. Im not sure they were prepared back then for the powerful campaign by kate and gerry that was to follow. I think more lies beneath the surface with regards to the police involved in the investigation,i think maybe there are some untruths to be revealed on their part, and believe there maybe involvement by other people outside of the police force. All of this i believe as panicked the police into swaying this investigation towards the involvement of kate and gerry.
 
I wont lie to you. At first i thought madeleine was dead. I believed she was taken by a predatory peadophile and taken to a place where she was abused and then killed(that wasn't nice writing that) I was certain the guy who did it was a local man. Not naming anybody, but its not uncommon for a person who watches child pornography on the pc, to at some point carry out a sick act on a child..even if they have never had these intentions before. When i first heard about a certain man being investigated, i immediately come to that conclusion.It was something i had embedded in my head and couldnt let go of. I still go back there now on days. Infact it was only after reading your site brian, and talking with my friends that i have come around to the idea that madeleine could, and probably is very much alive somewhere.

Can anyone remember the psychics at the begining of the case saying the colour pink all the time?They said it was quite significant and needed to be found/ ruled out???Well do you think that cuddle cat could be what they are referring to?
There was a point in this case where the pj were getting slated for their incompetence in the investigation.All their mistakes were being made apparent,and suddenly people starting talking about any involvement they may have had in Madeleine's abduction. It was around this time that cuddle cat was called into the investigation, and the police wanted it for testing/tampering???
I thought it very odd that a toy madeleine had slept with,and had possibly been touched by the abductor wasn't taken away in the first place as evidence??It made me wonder(and still does)why the cat had been called in at that point.?And also why it was returned.
I think cuddle cat held some important dna clue until that point. And i don't believe it had anything to do with kate or gerry. If they had hurt madeleine, or covered up her accidental death, cuddle cat would have without a doubt been laid to rest with her.
I am wondering Brian, if cuddle cat was left behind by mistake by the abductor.And then when kate and gerrys campaign was in full swing with  fingers pointing at the Portuguese police, cuddle cat was a piece of evidence they needed to clear up.

Brain do you think the pj are using a local person/s to help them ..is there a realistic possibility that maybe r murat or/and malinka, michala, and louis could all be involved in this together.Or do you feel that one or more of them are aiding certain members of the police out there to cover up something?

Also the colour blue as been mentioned by neo a lot,she is quite persistent with it. I have noticed that the pj's flag is blue with a shield type emblem in the middle!! Not sure if thats what she is picking up on?Something maybe to  ponder on before you go to sleep tonight Brian!!..and seeing as you mention a flag a lot, i thought it relevant to all this and so i brought it up.

can i also take this opportunity to say to kate and gerry, and their extended family,some of which i know reads your site.That my heart, and that of my friends(who also read your site Brian) are always with you,and of course with madeleine. I hope and prey for you this is over soon. And i hope that at some point, you can all put this terrible experience behind you and live a normal happy life....with madeleine.

Hi Clair, thanks for writing and we are doing just fine.  In the Sofia case the modeling agency says its not the same girl...so we are still looking.  I think many of these missing persons cases in Portugal are connected.   Not sure about the other sighting, but I do think the Taxi driver was telling the truth.  I do not trust anything the PJ has to say, and I do not think they ever attempted to look for Madeleine...they are out to get the parents, and it looks like they just might.

Hi Brian,
We're nearly there, I'm sure of it.
Last nights documentary of the last year since MM went missing, "no stone unturned" was mentioned time & time again. Yet - have they considered anything you have had to say? No - because when the box marked "psychics" was shown, Gerry said that they'd only follow up things that were credible - so although not saying anything considered psychic (and I know that you are not) was not credible, it was carefully shown that this was the suggestion as the remark was made by this pile of contacts. So - who decided what is credible - and why would they rule all this out if they truely were going to overturn any stone? I know you and many others have tried to bring your past cases to their attention - but if you are viewing Mrs Healey, please, please bring Brians notes to attention. She will be found sooner if you do.

Hi Amanda, I think she will be found soon too...the parents are not a concern of mine, it's obvious that they have their own way of doing things and this will not change...I'm not saying this is bad or good...they very well may been doing things we don't hear about.    Anyway, I think it's important to get these areas in PDL searched...since the PJ are not allowing it to happen, it has to be done without them knowing.
